What Are Exosomes? The Next Big Thing in Skin Rejuvenation

Exosomes are an exciting development in skin rejuvenation, especially when paired with skin needling.

The process involves applying exosomes—tiny vesicles rich in growth factors and proteins—directly onto the skin after microneedling.

The micro-channels created by needling allow these active ingredients to penetrate deeper, enhancing collagen production, improving texture, and boosting elasticity.

Why exosomes will become one of the most in-demand procedures

Daniela Scarmozzino, owner of Forme Beauty and Laser Clinic and one of the first practitioners in Victoria to offer exosome treatments, says while Skin needling alone is well-established for improving skin texture, but when combined with exosomes, the results can be even more significant.

Emerging research supports that exosomes stimulate fibroblasts, promoting collagen and elastin production, which helps plump and rejuvenate the skin.

Daniela also points to a broader shift in the cosmetic industry: people are moving away from injectables like Botox and fillers, seeking less invasive treatments that can deliver comparable results.

She sees this as a positive trend, highlighting that while Botox has a long-standing safety record, the long-term safety of dermal fillers remains less certain due to limited longitudinal studies.

In fact, Dr. Mona Gohara, Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology, Yale School of Medicine likened exosomes as little tiny, ‘prime’ packages coming to save the day in a recent Elle article.

“Each cell (mostly) in the human body secretes these packages filled with genetic material, lipids, proteins, growth factors, and other tools that, when secreted from one cell, activate another to work magic,” he said.

What exosomes actually do

They target the root cause of aging by rejuvenating your cells, rebuilding collagen and promoting healing in the skin providing a long term skin improvement.

“Rather than just masking the skin concern on the outside like botox does, exosomes also improve skin quality not just muscle activity and there are no risks like weakening of the muscle tissue that botox can do,” says Danela.

It’s popularity is attributed to its benefits for skin of all ages.

While exosome therapy is still emerging, it offers promising results for skin tightening, collagen stimulation, and firming without the risks associated with injectables, including vascular complications or cell death.

“This makes exosomes an innovative, non-invasive option that aligns with the growing demand for safer, regenerative skin treatments,” says Daniela.

What happens during the treatment?

After the skin is cleansed and prepared, the exosome serum is applied topically, usually following a treatment like microneedling or laser therapy to help it absorb more deeply.

The serum is gently massaged into the skin, allowing the exosomes to deliver regenerative signals directly to the skin cells, promoting repair, collagen production, and healing.

Following the procedure, there is typically minimal downtime. Most people experience mild redness similar to a light sunburn for 24 to 48 hours.

It's recommended to avoid strong skincare products and direct sun exposure during the initial recovery. Results often appear within a week, with the skin looking plumper, smoother, and more radiant, and further improvements developing over the following months as collagen rebuilds.
